SINGAPORE'S unemployment rate jumped to 2.9 percent in the first quarter, even as the economy added 48,000 new jobs, the Ministry of Manpower said Monday, Apr 30.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2006, according to the ministry's preliminary estimate.

The number of jobs created in the first quarter was down from 51,500 in the fourth quarter but higher than 45,000 a year earlier, the ministry said in a statement.
