SINGAPORE will acquire 12 more Boeing F-15SG fighter aircraft as part of its air force's continuing effort to renew its fighter fleet, the Ministry of Defence said.

The 12 jetfighters would be in addition to the purchase of 12 F-15SGs announced in December 2005.

The ministry said today, Oct 22, that it had exercised the option to purchase eight more F-15SG fighters which was part of the original contract signed in December 2005

"Along with this buy, an additional order for four F-15SGs was made," it said in a statement.

The additional F-15SGs, which will be equipped with sophisticated avionics and weapon systems, will be delivered from 2010, it added.

The ministry signed a contract with the Boeing company in December 2005 to acquire 12 F-15SG -- designated "SG" for "Singapore" -- fighter aircraft to replace the force's A-4 Skyhawk fighters which have been retired.

The initial purchases are expected to be delivered from next year.

The ministry said in 2005 that the F-15SG, which has a configuration that is unique to Singapore, would be "the most advanced variant of the F-15" and would operate as the Singapore air force's next generation multi-role fighter jet.
