DEPUTY Commerce Minister Preecha Laohapongchana on Thursday, Jun 29, shrugged off criticism by a former Singaporean premier on the Thai political development, saying Thailand knows well how to deal with the current political and economic situation.

Singapore’s former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew said in his news article released recently that the Thai political development had relatively lagged behind that of Iraq.

Mr Preecha said the economic and political systems in Thailand are clearly separated.

However, he conceded the current political uncertainties had affected confidence among local and foreign entrepreneurs to a certain extent.

To restore the confidence, the caretaker government has closely monitored the trade and investment climate and has tried to give the entrepreneurs proper understanding of the situation.

To boost confidence overseas, he said, Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusripitak and many cabinet members had made road shows to explain the Thai economic conditions to foreign investors.

He believed the political woes would ease once the general election is held and the new government is formed.

Foreign investors will then return to invest more in Thailand.

On the current political impasse, Mr Preecha said he wants to call on all parties to make one step back so that the conflicts would be solved. (TNA)
