SINGAPORE is seeking clarification from Malaysia on the exact date when the Causeway will be temporarily closed. Malaysian Works Minister Samy Vellu said last Thursday the Causeway will be closed to heavy vehicles in September this year.

However, Singapore officials say this differs from what was initially proposed in an earlier notification sent by the Malaysian authorities last month.

A government statement, issued in response to media queries, says diverting traffic from the causeway to the Second Link will undoubtedly cause delays to drivers and higher costs.

That is why both countries must work together to minimise disruption to tourist and trade flows.

The statement says a multi-agency group in Singapore has been looking into this.

Preparatory steps include redeploying resources and adjusting traffic flows at the checkpoints.

However, Singapore says these will take time to implement, and hopes to discuss the matter and coordinate the timing of the Causeway closure with its Malaysian counterparts soon. - CNA /dt
