News Asia August 13, 2007 SINGAPORE By Dominique Loh MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has said stability in the Taiwan Straits is vital to US-China relations, and to peace and stability in East Asia. He said the situation must be carefully managed by all sides. In a statement, Mr Lee said he explained this to visiting Taiwan's politicians, Vincent Siew of the KMT (Kuomintang) and presidential candidate Frank Hsieh of the ruling DPP (Democratic Progressive Party). Mr Lee met Mr Siew on August 8 and Mr Hsieh on August 11. Mr Siew is the running mate of Ma Ying-jeou, KMT's presidential candidate for the 2008 Taiwan election. Mr Lee said he explained to both candidates that Singapore has deep ties with Taiwan, going back to the early 1970s. Then Taiwan's president Chiang Ching Kuo was fully aware of Singapore's position of the 'One-China' policy. Mr Lee also made clear his opposition of Taiwan independence, saying it would be damaging for Taiwan and the region. He said it would be counter-productive for Taiwan if it continues to project itself as a separate independent republic and to apply to be a member of the United Nations. He said Taiwanese leaders, including the President, know that the application must fail. Mr Lee said none of the five permanent members of the Security Council would support Taiwan's application and China would veto it. He said by pushing for independence, China would further tighten its pressure on the international stage and accelerate the build-up of its military. Mr Lee said it was best to leave Taiwan's international position as it stands. On Sunday, Mr Hsieh who was in Singapore for a two-day private visit, was given a tour of the NTUC Centre. The former Taiwanese premier learned about Singapore's labour movement and how it evolved. Also discussed was Singapore's economy, the workforce and the system of tripartism - involving employers, Government and the unions. Mr Hsieh was also impressed with NTUC's achievements. "The biggest help and welfare is getting workers employed. Through employability they can help the government improve the country's situation and make it a safer place to live. It will attract foreign investments as well," he said. Mr Hsieh concluded his Singapore stop-over with a visit to the Harmony
Centre at the An-Nahdhah Mosque in Bishan. - CNA/de |
