Post September 15, 2007 Jakarta DEFENSE Minister Juwono Sudarsono said Thursday, September 15, that Indonesia and Singapore had not yet reached a final agreement on the defense pact. He said the Indonesian government was still waiting for the House of Representatives to ratify the draft of the defense pact, which consists of the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) and the extradition treaty. "We are waiting for the House to agree to ratify the two treaties based on the approval from its Consultative Council," he said. The House has refused to ratify the treaties and has demanded the government establish clearer mechanisms around the pact's implementing agreements. "We have no idea of how Singapore's parliament is dealing with the pact, but we won't be able to reach a final agreement before the House ratifies it," Juwono said. Reports said Singapore's parliament is currently in the process of ratifying the draft. The defense pact was agreed to by the Indonesian and Singaporean governments on April 27 in Bali in the presence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. |
