News Asia October 9, 2007 SINGAPORE SINGAPORE and Indonesia have agreed to put aside the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) indefinitely. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said Singapore respects Jakarta’s decision to do this. It was responding to media queries on Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda’s remarks that both sides are putting aside the DCA. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said Singapore is aware of the "complex dynamics of Indonesia’s domestic debate over the Extradition Treaty (ET) and Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA)". Singapore also understands that Jakarta may need more time before tabling the two agreements to Parliament for ratification. The Ministry stressed that Singapore remains fully committed to the agreement between Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Indonesian President Yudhoyono in October 2005 to conclude the ET and DCA as a package. Singapore, said the Ministry, also remains fully committed to the associated four Implementing Arrangements which were agreed to by the two governments on 23 April this year. — CNA/ir |
