FEER curbs eased
Far Eastern Economic Review July 10, 1997
THE Singapore government told the Far Eastern Economic Review that it would be permitted to station a full-time staff reporter in Singapore.
Singapore's Ministry of Information and the Arts also informed the REVIEW that the number of copies the magazine is allowed to circulate in the city-state would be raised from 6,000 to 8,000 per issue.
The REVIEW's editor, Nayan Chanda, welcomed the decision, saying that these steps brought the magazine "closer to a fully normal journalistic relationship" with Singapore.
He added: "We look forward to the day when circulation of the REVIEW in Singapore will be set by the market, rather than government restriction."
The REVIEW circulated almost 10,000 copies per issue in Singapore before the government placed limits on the weekly in 1987.
