SINGAPORE: Opposition leader
Joshua Jeyaretnam has filed an appeal against a verdict in a libel
case brought by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.
Mr Jeyaretnam, 71, declined to reveal the specific grounds of the appeal. ``We are appealing, of course, against the whole of the decision,'' he said.
The High Court last month ordered Mr Jeyaretnam to pay Mr Goh S$20,000 for telling an election rally that one of his fellow candidates had filed a police report against the prime minister.
But the award was 10 per cent of what Mr Goh had asked for and Mr Jeyaretnam was told to pay only 60 per cent of court costs.
Mr Goh appealed against the size of the award earlier this month.
Mr Jeyaretnam said Mr Goh's appeal was scheduled to be heard on 23 February: ``I don't think that will be heard now. They both have to be heard together.'' - Reuters
