Flights of fancy with few cleans loos in sight
TOILETS at Changi airport and the city's zoo were among the top five loos in a competition held in the squeaky clean city state, the Ministry of Environment said yesterday.
Most of the calls made by 2000 Singaporeans to the "Clean Public Toilets" hotline campaign voiced approval for the toilets at the ultramodern international airport, the ministry said.
The other four winners were the Singapore Zoological Gardens, a railway station in the western part of the city, a food market and a shopping centre.
"These toilets show that cleanliness is achievable, and this should encourage both toilet management and users across Singapore to help raise the standard of all our public toilets," an Environment Ministry spokesman said.
The clean toilets campaign, launched last month, generated strong public interest in a country noted for its cleanliness, stiff fines for littering and a ban on the sale of chewing gum.
The campaign was spurred by a comment by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong last year in which he cited the hallmarks of social grace as clean toilets and the setting up of school choirs to promote love of music.
The management of the winning toilets will be honoured at a ceremony next week.
Ten Singaporeans picked from among those who called the clean toilets hotline will be presented with prizes valued at S$8000 and a return air ticket to Hong Kong.
