Opposition leaders to address conference on S'pore


Sydney, Australia. Nov 22, 1997

SINGAPOREAN opposition leaders and the author of a book on the island state will present papers at a two day conference on human rights and democracy in Singapore in Sydney, Australia later this month. The conference theme is: Political Dissent in Singapore - 1987 ISA Arrests, 10 Years On.

Workers' Party chairman Mr Joshua B. Jeyeretnam will speak on the Opposition and the State.

Civil Society and Democracy is the title of the paper by Singapore Democratic Party secretary general. Dr Chee Soon Juan.

Mr Tang Liang Hong, also of the Workers' Party will speak on Asian Values and Democracy.

Author Jim Minchin will speak on the Causes and Effects of the 1987 ISA Arrests. He will also speak on Internal Control and External Propaganda. A forum will follow each paper.

The closing session will be a plenary session on the Prospects of Democratisation in Singapore. The two day conference begins with a press conference on Friday Nov 28.

During the conference participants will also view a film Fatal Reaction, screened at the Sydney film festival this year. The film deals with the singles dating scene in Singapore, particularly the social Development unit set up by the government to encourage University graduates to marry and procreate.

The conference is organised by University of Sydney Singapore And Malaysian Human Rights Association, the University Of Sydney Student Representative Council, the University of Technology, Sydney Students' Association and Macquarie University Student Representative Council.
