The government is launching a series of "true-life" television shows about AIDS victims to educate the public.

Called From the AIDS Files, the series consists of four 15-minute episodes broadcast in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

The first episode, titled Moment of Truth, is the true story of two young men, one of whom develops AIDS, after picking up women for casual sex.

The second and third programmes show the importance of families rallying around members stricken with the disease.

A fourth, titled The Birds and the Bees, is to help parents advise their children on relationships with the opposite sex.

The first episode was to be shown yesterday.

Singapore has been intensifying its battle against AIDS as infections with HIV continues to climb among its three million people. The Health Ministry estimated there were 170 new cases last year, a 41 per cent rise.

The vast majority of HIV victims contracted the infection through heterosexual contacts.
