AN MP from Singapore's ruling People's Action Party has been charged with helping a man cheat a finance company by issuing false invoices.

Choo Wee Khiang, 44, was charged on Tuesday with two counts of issuing false invoices amounting to S$2.87 million. He was freed on S$100,000 bail.

It was believed to be the first time a sitting People's Action Party MP had faced such charges, the Straits Times said.

The party is known for insisting on good character among its ranks and for clean government. If convicted, Choo faces up to seven years' jail, a fine and the loss of his seat in parliament.

He was charged with issuing a false invoice for S$1.18 million for equipment sales in November 1990 and another invoice of S$1.69 million in January 1991, to Wong Kee See, managing director of a construction company.

Wong used the invoices to obtain loans from UBMC Finance worth S$1.89 million.

Wong is free on bail of S$100,000 on related charges. Another person, Lim Soh Lian, was charged with helping Wong cheat another finance firm.
