Asian democrats sign unity pact

Penh August 7, 2000 The International Republican Institute (IRI), a non-governmental organization headquartered in Washington, DC, and the Sam Rainsy Party held a three day Asia Regional Conference on Good Governance here. "The conference was a complete success," said IRI Regional Director for Asia Paul Grove. "It brought together like-minded individuals who share a common goal of strengthening democracy, human rights, and the rule of law throughout Asia." "The conference played to a consistently packed audience - including representatives from Cambodia's most active civil society organizations - which is an indication of the great interest in the topics of democracy and good governance. It was an honor for IRI to co-host a conference for Asia's most dedicated democrats," he added. During the conference, participants discussed how best to ensure transparency and accountability in governance. Rejecting the notion that corruption and authoritarianism are Asian values - and understanding that there is greater strength in numbers - the participants decided to demonstrate their solidarity by signing a "Declaration of Unity." "The Declaration is an indication of how serious Asia's democrats and reformers are in our collective struggle for accountability and transparency," said Cambodian Opposition Leader Sam Rainsy. "We invite other people from political parties, nongovernmental organizations, and the private sector to join our united pledge for democracy, good governance, and the rule of law." Secretary General of the Singapore Democratic Party Dr Chee Soon Juan stated, "Authoritarian governments should take note that Asia's democrats intend to be better organized and responsive to each other's plight. Why should we remain silent when our colleagues and neighbors are harassed and intimidated? The Declaration makes clear our intentions to stand united in our common struggle." Participants in the conference represented some of Asia's leading reformers from Australia, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. |
