A 73-YEAR-OLD woman has been sentenced to six months in jail for renting her apartment to illegal Indonesian immigrants, the Straits Times reported today.

Wong Yue, a retired shoe seller, rented out her apartment to five Indonesian men whose visas had expired. Police raided the apartment on July 10 and arrested the five.

Under Singapore laws, landlords are responsible for checking their foreign tenants' immigration papers and passports, and can be charged with harboring illegal migrants if their visas are found to have expired.

The maximum jail term is two years with fines of up to S$6000 (US$3488).
