ORE women than men are attempting suicide in Singapore, a report said Apr 22, citing relationship problems with family, lovers and friends as among the causes.

Last year, 268 women who had attempted to kill themselves were admitted to the National University Hospital (NUH), compared to only 83 men, the Sunday Times said.

A study carried out last year "shows that when it comes to attempted suicides, women far outnumber the men, accounting for 73 percent of admissions to NUH in the last decade," the newspaper said.

But while fewer in number, the men usually succeed in their suicide bids as they use methods that assures instant death.

Women usually resort to overdoses and are often brought to hospital before they die.

Family problems and tumultuous relationships with friends are often cited as the main causes for suicide attempts in the wealthy city state, the newspaper said.
