Agence France Presse July 31, 2001 SINGAPORE ONLINE entertainment and media sites are attracting "a disproporionate number" of 12-17 year olds in Singapore, global measurement service group Nielsen//NetRatings said July 31 in a report. "Teenagers are leading the way in the use of the web as a media rich environment, and are enjoying a varied and enriching experience on the Internet," said Hoe Chin Fee, managing director for South Asia. "Over 60 percent of teenagers visited entertainment sites, as compared to only one third of the overall online population," she said. In a June survey, the entertainment and streaming media sites attracted 90 percent more teenagers than expected by Nielsen. "Logging on to find out about the latest TV programs and gossip on celebrities, as well as keeping up to date on music chart toppers seems to be the main lure," said Hoe. The survey of 4000 teenagers showed the average person spent 13 hours and four minutes on line in June, more than double the average time in June last year. Mirc.com, the online chat channel, was the top destination for teenagers, followed by entertainment site flowgo.com. Two local entertainment sites, Mediacorptv.com and Mediacorpsingapore.com, were among the top 10 sites visited by Singapore teenagers. |
