AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE in Singapore

THE number of Singaporeans looking for jobs online grew 33 per cent between April and July, fuelled largely by students, NetValue said on September 24.

There were 144,870 unique visitors to online job sites in July compared with 108,340 in April, the Internet measurement firm said in a statement.

"With the consolidation going on in the banking and information technology industries, more people are expected to look for jobs. The Internet remains a viable channel for active job seekers," NetValue's country manager Jack Loo said.

Students visiting online job sites grew 6.8 per cent in July.

"The downturn of the economy has also prompted students to pro-actively seek job openings," Mr Loo said.

Management staff who searched for jobs online grew by just over 3 per cent. But professionals who visited such sites dropped by 8.4 per cent between April and July.

Almost 80 per cent of employment site visitors owned a mobile phone, compared with 72.8 per cent of Singapore's Internet population.

The Singaporean online job seeker was also a heavy e-mail user, sending out 38.2 per month compared with 24.7 for the overall local Internet population, NetValue said.
