AMILY members in Singapore can now talk to their loved ones in prison cells with just the click of a button after the city-state launched a remote video conference facility.

The Home Affairs Ministry, which oversees the prison department, said Thursday (Dec 13) the S$2.2 million (US$1.2 million US) Prisons Link Centre was in line with its efforts to tap technology to enhance its services.

"This initiative is part of our goal to utilise new technology to improve our services and make our systems more advanced and efficient in order to better serve inmates' families," said Chua Chin Kiat, director of the prison service.

The centre houses 10 air-conditioned cubicles, each equipped with a 35-inch display screen to show the inmate's face.

Since the pilot testing of the centre began in September, as many as 120 families use the video conference service a month, the ministry said.
