SINGAPORE Democratic Party chief Chee Soon Juan and party member Gandhi Ambalam were arrested outside the Istana Wednesday, May 1.

They were trying to go ahead with an rally-cum-exhibition outside the Istana although they did not have a licence to do so.

The Public Entertainments Licensing Unit refused to grant Dr Chee a license because of potential law and order problems.

Dr Chee was warned by the police repeatedly over the past two days not to proceed with the rally outside the Istana and instead to apply to have the event indoors, or at Speakers' Corner. Dr Chee, who's a police national serviceman with the rank of assistant superintendent was warned once again when he arrived outside the Istana again, but he chose to defy the warnings.

Mr Ambalam was arrested for disorderly conduct, while Dr Chee was being taken away. The two men were brought to Tanglin Police Division for further questioning.
