France Presse February 12, 2003 SINGAPORE A MALAYSIAN company has bought the rights to an internet domain name called www.studysingapore.com promoting Malaysian schools, triggering complaints from the city-state, the Straits Times reported Wednesday, Feb 12. Visitors to the Web site hoping to get more details about schools in Singapore will instead be fed information about private schools, colleges and universities in Malaysia, the report said. "We are just hoping to direct as much traffic as we can to our Web site," said Jamie Ng, an employee from Challenger Concept, a Malaysian company who owns the website domain. The site said it was supported by Malaysia's Ministry of Education. Both Singapore and Malaysia want to promote their education institutions, with the former aiming to increase the number of foreign students from 50,000 to 150,000 in 10 years. Magdalene Lee, director of education services division from the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), said Challenger Concept's diversion tactic "does not seem right." The STB is developing a Web site with information about studying in the city-state and will register several domain names. |
