A FORMER television presenter was found guilty Tuesday, Dec 30, of molesting a 30-year-old woman in a salacious case that has gripped this largely conservative city-state.

Shankar Aiyar, an Indian national, was found guilty of outraging the modesty of the woman following a housewarming party last year, a court spokesman said. Sentencing was set for January 6.

A report by broadcaster Channel NewsAsia said its former presenter Shankar could face a jail term of up to two years and could be fined or caned.

The court spokesman said Shankar's lawyers were seeking a lower sentence during a mitigation plea Tuesday.

The court heard that Shankar had brought the woman, a former co-worker, to his apartment following the party at which she reportedly became drunk.

She went to the police after finding herself naked in bed the next morning beside Shankar.

Shankar, a bachelor, said he brought the woman to his apartment in a taxi to sober up but denied molesting her.

After details were reported in the media, the court added extra seats to cope with the growing number of people turning up to watch the case unfold.
