France Presse February 12, 2004 SINGAPORE AN Indian former television presenter convicted of molesting a colleague has appealed to Singapore president S.R Nathan to avoid four strokes of the cane, the Straits Times reported Thursday. Feb 12. Vidya Shankar Aiyar is claiming he is medically unfit to endure the punishment, using a report from a "renowned, local government hospital", a spokesman from the High Commission of India was quoted as saying. His lawyer had said in his final submissions to the court during the trial that Shankar had back problems because of a slipped disc, making him unfit to be caned. The 37-year-old bachelor, who worked for local broadcaster Channel NewsAsia, is also seeking a review of his 16-month prison sentence passed down last month. Shankar began his jail sentence on February 3 after the court found
him guilty of molesting his 30-year-old colleague in his apartment last
