France Presse August 14, 2004 SINGAPORE A DISC jockey had been fired and another suspended in Singapore after listeners in the conservative city-state complained about sexual vulgarity on their morning radio program, a report said Saturday, Aug 14. The Straits Times said DJ Sheikh Haikel, 28, a host on the show Morning Madness had been sacked by his employer, MediaCorp Radio, on Tuesday while his co-host Daniel Ong had been suspended. Another DJ also had her contract terminated, the report said. The three DJs had been named in letters to to newspapers complaining about lewd and vulgar comments on their show. Newspaper reader Lau Chee Kin had complained he was driving his children to school last month while tuned in to music on 98.7 FM. During the program, a student called the station to ask the DJs how he should approach a girl he fancied. Lau said DJ Sheikh told the caller "to ask the girl whether she was wearing white panties." Another letter-writer Chow Moh Hoong said the DJs had been "telling obscene jokes, making crude comments on sex, sexual organs and sexual behaviour in almost every broadcast." "If these are the celebrities that our young people look up to -- their idols and heroes whom they see smiling at them from the covers of their favourite magazines -- then we are doomed to have a generation of young people with a distorted view of sex," she wrote. Erina Cook, program director for the station, said in a published response to Lau's letter that the "cheeky banter" with the listener was "unfortunately carried too far and we apologise if it offended listeners." She said MediaCorp radio had internal guidlines governing content and would continue to monitor its programs. Industry regulator Media Development Authority said investigations were underway. MediaCorp Radio could face a fine of up to S$50,000 (US$29,400), the news report said. Conservative family values are still dominant in affluent Singapore amid attempts to ease social constraints to meet the needs of a younger generation. |
