EMPLOYERS in Singapore were urged Tuesday, Dec 28, by the government to let their workers from countries struck by the killer tidal waves to take leave in a show of "compassion and patience."

"The Ministry of Manpower urges all employers of foreign workers from affected countries to show compassion and patience, and to assist their workers whose families may have been affected by the catastrophe," it said in a statement.

"This includes allowing workers to contact their families back home and granting leave of absence if requested," the statement said.

The ministry also promised to make it easier for foreign workers to leave the city-state, and told them to contact their diplomatic representatives if they had difficulties contacting their families.

There are about one million foreign workers in Singapore, mainly from Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives, India, Myanmar and Thailand.
