SINGAPORE will increase its aid for tsunami-hit nations to S$25 million (US$15 million) as the city-state sends aid to Indonesia and Thailand, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Thursday, Dec 30.

"We are part of this region where it has happened and we have to respond," Lee said.

The increase in aid comes as the global community struggles to cope with the scale of the tragedy that has claimed more than 90,000 lives.[Updated Dec 31: more than 120,000 lives.]

Three C-130 aircrafts loaded with relief supplies along with a 25-personnel medical contingent had already departed Thursday morning for Indonesia's devastated Aceh province, the defence ministry said.

Four military helicopters also departed for the Thai island resort of Phuket with relief supplies and will assist the Thai government in its rescue operations, it said.
