A STATE-BACKED body to monitor anti-competitive practices in Singapore will be set up in January, the government said Thursday, Dec 30.

The new Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) will "remove or limit practices" that are anti-competitive and will enforce the Competition Act which was passed in Parliament earlier this year, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said in a statement.

"The CCS will have powers to investigate and adjudicate anti-competitive activities," it said.

"It will also have the powers to impose sanctions."

The Competition Act will come into effect in phases from January 2006 to allow the CCS time to "build up its resources and capabilities to perform its enforcement duties," the statement said.
