Visitor arrivals up 8.6 percent in August

SINGAPORE


SINGAPORE said Friday, Sept 23,visitors to the city-state totalled 810,423 in August, up 8.6 percent on the year, boosted by travellers from the Philippines, Vietnam, India and Hong Kong.

Nearly half of the visitors during the month came from Indonesia, China, Japan, Australia and Malaysia, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said in a statement.

Overall, "the strong performance in August 2005 was driven by double-digit growths in arrivals of more than 20 percent from the Philippines, Vietnam, India and Hong Kong," the STB said.

Arrivals from the Philippines grew 53 percent, Vietnam 39 percent, India 25 percent and Hong Kong 25 percent.

The average hotel occupancy rates was 84 percent in the month, up 3.0 percentage points from last year, with hotel revenue running at S$99 million (US$59 million), 17.3 percent higher than August 2004.
