France Presse October 3, 2005 SINGAPORE SINGAPORE'S Changi airport will install hundreds of surveillance cameras to scrutinise passenger activity around the clock, spot unattended luggage and monitor other security threats, a report said Monday, Oct 3 . The Straits Times reported that the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) had issued a tender last week calling for suppliers to submit proposals to install more than 400 such cameras at one of the world's top hub airports. A CAAS spokeswoman told AFP that the tender proposal was in place but declined to provide further details. The cameras will automatically alert the airport's security personnel if they spot luggage left unattended for an extended period, the newspaper said. Alerts will also be triggered if the cameras detect vehicles parked in a restricted area beyond a permitted period, or in the event a mob gathers. The installation of advanced closed circuit television or CCTV cameras in Changi will be on top of surveillance measures already implemented across Singapore, including subway stations and districts frequented by foreigners. Singapore has regularly warned its citizens that the country remains a prime target for extremist groups because of its close association with the US government and tough stance against Islamic radicals. French anti-terrorist expert Jean-Louis Bruguiere said recently that financial capitals such as Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney could be attacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists to undermine investor confidence in the region. |
