PARLIAMENT has approved an increase in the President's salary, which is also known as the Privy Purse, for the fiscal year 2005.

The salary will be revised to $2,507,200, an increase of $114,900 from the last adjustment in February last year.

Second Minister for Finance Raymond Lim proposed on Tuesday that the House support the change in view of "higher projected bonuses".

A Ministry of Finance spokesperson said that the bonuses are higher because the economy has performed better than expected.

Last February, there was a restoration of cuts in the President's salary, which was increased by $19,200 to $2,392,300.

One month before that, Parliament had approved a $247,100 wage rise for the President, also in view of the restoration of cuts to his salary as well as higher projected bonuses.

In both those instances, changes had also been made to the other provisions under the Civil List, which specifies his allowance, the expenses of the Istana and the salaries of personal staff.

No other changes were proposed on Tuesday. The total expenditure in Class 1 of the Act, which consists of the Privy Purse, entertainment allowance and the Acting President's allowance, now stands at $2,627,800.

The payments under the Civil List are all drawn from the Consolidated Fund, which comprises all revenues of Singapore that are not allocated to specific purposes by any written law.
