leaders visit US

TWO Singapore opposition leaders will made a week-long visit the
United States this month.
Workers' Party leader, Mr J. B. Jeyaretnam
and Singapore Democratic Party secretary general, Dr Chee
Soon Juan will be in the US from 18 - 24 April 1999.
They will visit Washington DC and New York City to met with officials in Congress, the State Department and the United Nations.
The two politicians will also be giving talks and holding discussions with leaders in the academic, media and NGO communities.
A media release said the purpose of the visit was "to brief leaders in the American community on the political situation in Singapore and continued undemocratic system of governance in the country".
Both leaders will also impress upon the United Nations on the need for free and fair elections in Singapore "which at the moment are neither", the statement said.
Dr Chee will also visit San Francisco and Seattle to give lectures at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Washington. He will also address the World Affairs Council while in Seattle.
