PM Goh
drops petition against Jeyaretnam
Straits Times July 3, 1999
PRIME Minister Goh Chok Tong has withdrawn his petition to make
Workers' Party chief and Non-Constituency MP, Mr J.B.
Jeyaretnam, a bankrupt, his lawyers said yesterday.
They declined to elaborate, but the petition was filed last year after Mr Jeyaretnam failed to pay Mr Goh $100,000 in defamatory damages plus interest.
Mr Goh won the damages after he sued Mr Jeyaretnam for defaming him at an election rally in 1997 in the last general election.
Mr Jeyaretnam made some payments to the PM, but has not paid the full amount plus interest. He said he could be made a bankrupt and could lose his seat in parliament as he did not have enough money to pay Mr Goh.
